A working overview of Gastrointestinal endoscopy and gastrointestinal services in Aotearoa NZ

Members of the Executive in conjunction with representatives from the New Zealand Associations of General Surgeons and the New Zealand Conjoint Committee for Recognition of Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy met with transition team members of Te Whatu Ora earlier this year to discuss gastroenterology in the new health system.

In response to the meeting and requests made by the Transition Team, NZSG and NZAGSs leaders quickly put together this high-level document to brainstorm challenges our profession faces, and and offer practical, evidence-based shared solutions.

Te Whatu Ora staff have been busy with the transition and have yet to respond. The Executive wish to crack on, and share Getting to the guts of it - A working overview of Gastrointestinal endoscopy and gastrointestinal services in Aotearoa NZ with our members.

Please take the time to read the document which discusses:

  • Equity and inequity for GI endoscopy
  • Quality of endoscopy service provision
  • Consistency of guidelines and access to endoscopy and gastrointestinal services
  • Endoscopy service capacity
  • Endoscopy workforce - training
  • Endoscopy workforce – distribution and retention
  • Gastrointestinal services beyond GI endoscopy - another critical need

If you have feedback on the attached, we really want to hear it including any real-world data from your centre, key papers that could be included as well as (of course!) glaring omissions. Please share your thoughts with the Executive at office@nzsg.org.nz
