Specialist Gastroenterologist Waikato hospital

Applications are invited for a 1-year fixed term 0.8 FTE Specialist Gastroenterologist. This position becomes available in February 2023.

The successful appointee for this role will preferably have a broad range of Gastroenterology experience and training, however newly qualified SMO are also encouraged to apply.

Waikato hospital is one of the largest providers of healthcare services in New Zealand, providing local services for a population of 200,000 and tertiary services for a region of 900,000. Waikato Hospital situated in Hamilton is a modern 600 bed tertiary base hospital. Te Whatu Ora has an active commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and the improvement of Maori health. Hamilton is the third largest city in North Island; 1½ hours’ drive south of Auckland and offers a superb lifestyle and quality-of-life working environment. As the largest employer in Hamilton, there is a varied and approachable social network based around the hospital. It is within easy reach of both West Coast surfing and East Coast leisure beaches. The Ruapehu Ski-fields are 3 hours’ drive away, and there are outstanding opportunities for hiking, sailing, fishing, biking and many other outdoor activities within the Waikato, and throughout New Zealand.

The possession of specific clinical skills in endoscopic procedures is essential. Applicants must be registered with the New Zealand Medical Council (or have qualification that are immediately registerable) and have appropriate postgraduate qualifications. We serve as tertiary referral center for wide range of liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease and interventional endoscopy procedures.

The current team consists of 9 Gastroenterologists, Specialists Nurses in Hepatology and Inflammatory Bowel Disease and two Nurse Endoscopists. We have three advanced trainees as part of the national training scheme. The appointee will be involved in teaching, continuing medical education and quality improvement. There is emphasis on ongoing development of services to meet the needs of our patients. A commitment to customer focus, service development and teamwork are essential.
