The 15th NZSG Symposium on Inflammatory Bowel Disease, sponsored by Pharmaco (NZ) Ltd/Ferring, was held in Christchurch in March 2021.
The 2 yearly event was planned for mid 2020, but had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was the first large scale national gastroenterology meeting to be held in Christchurch since the 2011 earthquake. We had a record number of registrations, and the event was attended by 117 delegates including gastroenterologists, advanced trainees, and IBD nurses.
The symposium covered IBD epidemiology and model of care, IBD therapeutics, infection and IBD (including COVID), and pregnancy and IBD. We had a number of excellent speakers from around New Zealand, and also international speakers joining us virtually from Melbourne, Australia, and Chapel Hill, USA. We also enjoyed the advanced trainee case presentations and panel discussions.
The event dinner was held at the special Cardboard Cathedral, with an introduction by the Dean of Christchurch. Dr Tony Smith gave an entertaining talk on the history of IBD.
The symposium was well received and was a great networking opportunity for the New Zealand gastroenterology community. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to Christchurch for the NZSG ASM in November 2021.
