Recently, members of the Society were asked to take part in a survey on equity including questions around aspirational goals set out in the equity focus document below.

NZSG recognises that we have a fantastic membership, with considerable diversity that is worthy of celebration. It is well established that patients and communities in Aotearoa and worldwide benefit when the healthcare community reflects the population, especially in areas of need and significant inequity, that is often driven by systemic bias.

NZSG have set particular equity priorities for Māori, women, Pasifica and people of provincial origin in order to reflect and meet the needs of our communities. Our medical schools achieve diversity for graduating doctors; the next challenge is bringing this diversity through the training journey all the way to specialist level. Similar diversity challenges are shared with RACP specialties, other Colleges, as well as by gastroenterology programmes around the world.

The document An equity focus on selection of candidates to gastroenterology training in New Zealand looks at solutions to achieving equity in our specialty. This is one step of many that our Society has taken and will continue to take. Members of the Equity Working Group and Executive will present results of the equity survey with members at the AGM on November 24 at the Annual Scientific Meeting in Auckland. We hope to continue the conversation with members, answer questions, share next steps and bring everyone along in the equity waka.

While the survey is closed, please continue to share your feedback with us by emailing office@nzsg.org.nz
